Dragon Boat Tid Bit - LINGO

Freeboard - The distance between the waterline and the upper edge of the side of the boat.
A loss of freeboard is the most common reason for a dragon boat to sink.

Rules and Regulations

A team roster list must be submitted by: TBA.
A minimum race crew consists of - 16 paddlers, 1 drummer, and 1 steerperson, 18 people must be in the boat for each heat.
It is the team captain's responsibility to ensure that each team member has signed the team waiver.
Only crew members on the team roster will be allowed in Dragon Boats on race day.
Mixed teams must have a minimum of 8 women paddlers and 8 men paddlers.
Paddlers may only race with 1 team per category (special consideration may be given to out-of-town teams).

Race Format

The Niagara Dragon Boat Festival race course will be 500 metres long.

There will be 3 dragon boats racing in each heat. Each heat will last between 2 minutes to 2 minutes and 50 seconds.

The course is 500 metres long.
The race start line will be announced.
The race finish line will be 500 metres downstream.

To ensure maximum team safety additional Steerperson Training is required for all steerpeople. The Dragon Boats are heavy and long. Special training is given to maximize the efforts given by all teams.
